PIXELUP LABS

Metalab does not publish a price. Their Clutch profile lists a $100,000+ minimum project size and DesignRush lists "$50,000 & Up," which tells you most of what you need. If that budget is real for you, hire them. If it isn't, six studios do a version of the same job at Series A money: PIXELUP LABS ($25–40k, 2–5 weeks), Ramotion ($50k+), Clay ($50k+), Focus Lab (from about $30k), basement.studio ($10k+), and Character ($80–250k, for when prestige is the point).

How we know this market, and our bias up front

We wrote this list and we put ourselves first. Read our entry with that in mind: here is our price, here is what we are bad at, and here are four studios that beat us for specific jobs.

We have run 31 projects for funded B2B and AI-native startups, including Greptile (the 2025 rebrand and design system), Sully, Bland, Reducto, and CTGT. We hold 5.0 stars across every review. And we publish our own prices on this site, which is the part almost nobody in this list does.

We also lose work to Metalab, so we have read their proposals from the other side of a founder's inbox.

What Metalab actually costs, and what it doesn't publish

Metalab publishes no pricing page and no engagement minimum. The two figures in public are both directory listings: Clutch says $100,000+, DesignRush says $50,000 and up. Treat $100k as the realistic floor for brand plus product work and expect months, not weeks.

Everything else about them checks out. Founded in 2006 in Victoria, BC, acquired by Tiny in 2017, 50 to 249 people across 18-plus countries, remote since day one, 475+ products shipped. They did Slack's early interface, Coinbase's first consumer app, and Uber's early rider experience. In 2025 they rebranded Windsurf, one of the sharpest AI brand launches of the year, months before Cognition acquired it.

So this is not a page about Metalab being overpriced. They cost what they cost because teams go "100% dedicated to a single client," which is the correct way to buy design if you have the money and the calendar. The question here is narrower: what do you buy with $30k and six weeks instead of $100k and four months?

The price-tier map of this market

Two studios in this market publish an actual price. One of them is us.

1. PIXELUP LABS

What it is. The enterprise-readiness design partner for funded B2B startups, most of them AI-native. We rebuild brand, website, and product design around the opinion a founder holds about their market, so enterprise buyers stop hesitating before they ever book the demo.

Where it shines. Speed at the same craft level. A brand sprint is 2 weeks, a site is 3 weeks, brand plus site is 4 to 6. That is a team-shape claim, not a corner-cutting one: seven people, founder-led creative direction, no account layer between you and the person drawing. Greptile's 2025 rebrand and design system shipped 200+ components with dev-first docs and a 40% boost in their shipping speed. Sully, which has raised north of $30M, came to us as a website redesign and we reframed it as a sales-enablement problem, which is what it actually was.

Where it doesn't. If your rebrand needs a steering committee and six stakeholders signing off, Character or Focus Lab will serve you better, and we will tell you so on the call. We are opinionated to the point of taking over messaging, so if your strategy is locked and you want a pair of hands for a Figma file, a freelancer is cheaper and faster. We are not a growth agency: we fix how you are perceived, we do not run your ads. And we do not claim Metalab's depth in consumer product design at scale. They have shipped 475 products. We have shipped 31.

Pricing signal. Brand sprint $25–30k. Brand plus website $25–40k. Retainer from $6k/mo.

Verdict. Hire us if you raised a Series A, you are moving upmarket looking to sell to enterprise, and a pipeline review or a launch is 6 weeks out. Do not hire us if you are pre-PMF. Use a template and Claude Code, honestly, and come back after the pivot settles.

2. Character

What it is. A San Francisco brand studio with a portfolio built on Nike, Amazon, Android, and Sephora, plus early-stage work going back to Fitbit and Dropcam.

Where it shines. Pedigree and craft depth. When a rebrand has to survive a board conversation, a name your investors recognize does work that better design alone does not.

Where it doesn't. Price and calendar. This is Series B+ money on a 10 to 24 week clock. If your runway cannot absorb $80k and a quarter of waiting, Character is the wrong shape regardless of how good they are.

Pricing signal. $80–250k is our estimate, since Character publishes nothing. San Francisco market reporting groups them with Pentagram and Landor at $80k to $500k over 10 to 24 weeks. Treat $80k as a floor, not a quote.

Verdict. Hire Character when prestige is a deliverable, not a nice-to-have, and you have the quarter.

3. Clay

What it is. A San Francisco UX and branding agency with 32 verified Clutch reviews and a client list running through Google, Slack, Coinbase, Stripe, and Amazon.

Where it shines. Product design with an actual research layer underneath it. If your problem is a complicated application rather than a marketing site, Clay is the closest like-for-like substitution for Metalab here.

Where it doesn't. Not cheap and not fast. The $50k minimum is real, senior rates are $150–199/hr, and reported engagements run well past six figures once a design system is in scope. You are trading Metalab's brand name for a slightly lower floor, not for Series A pricing.

Pricing signal. Clutch lists a $50,000+ minimum and a $150–199/hr rate, verified August 2026.

Verdict. Hire Clay when the product surface is the hard part and the budget is closer to $50k than $25k.

4. Ramotion

What it is. A San Francisco studio, 10 to 49 people, with offices in New York, LA, and Austin, known for SaaS product branding and design systems. 29 Clutch reviews at 4.9 stars.

Where it shines. Systems. Ramotion's design-system work is why they show up on these lists, and if your real worry is what the brand looks like 12 months after launch, that focus matters more than the launch does.

Where it doesn't. The $50k minimum puts them above a lot of Series A brand budgets, and reported project sizes cluster in the $50k–$199k band. Their brand work is strong and slightly more conventional than the AI-native founders on this page usually want.

Pricing signal. Clutch lists a $50,000+ minimum and $150–199/hr, verified August 2026.

Verdict. Hire Ramotion when the design system is the deliverable that matters most and $50k+ is available.

5. Focus Lab

What it is. The B2B rebrand specialist. Savannah-based, remote, and the studio most likely to already have run a rebrand exactly like yours in your category.

Where it shines. Process under stakeholder pressure. Focus Lab is built to carry a rebrand through a company with real politics and multiple decision-makers. If four people have veto power at your company, this is the strongest entry on the page.

Where it doesn't. That same process costs time, and the top of their range goes past Metalab's floor. They are a brand studio first, so product design depth is thinner than Clay's or Metalab's.

Pricing signal. Clutch lists a $25,000+ minimum, verified August 2026. Reported elsewhere, not published: early-stage engagements around $30k, full enterprise rebrands at $100k to $350k, retainers from about $3,500/mo.

Verdict. Hire Focus Lab for a B2B rebrand that has to survive a committee.

6. basement.studio

What it is. A boutique studio in Mar del Plata, Argentina, founded in 2018, known on design Twitter for 3D, motion, and websites that get screenshotted.

Where it shines. The lowest real entry price here, and the highest ceiling on visual ambition per dollar.

Where it doesn't. Craft-led execution, not positioning and messaging strategy. Their Clutch profile is not yet reviewed, so you are buying on portfolio rather than verified outcomes. And motion-forward work can fight the exact thing an enterprise buyer wants, which is a company that looks like a safe bet.

Pricing signal. Reported Clutch figures are a $10,000+ minimum and $100–149/hr. We could not verify these on a live profile.

Verdict. Hire basement.studio for a site that has to be beautiful and loud, not for the brand argument underneath it.

Studios we left out, and why

The filter for this page: senior-led studios that can plausibly do Metalab's job for a funded startup. Four categories did not pass, and here is what they are instead.

Designjoy ($4,995/mo) and ManyPixels (from $699/mo). Subscriptions, and good ones. They buy throughput, not a positioning-led rebrand. Designjoy is one person, Brett Williams, on a 48-hour average turnaround. Neither is a Metalab substitution, and neither pretends to be.

Superside. Scaled production, with reported enterprise budgets of $10k to $30k a month. That is an in-house-team replacement, not a brand studio.

Pentagram. A genuine peer in craft, and the opposite of cheaper.

Offshore generalists billing $25–49/hr. The Metalab alternatives page ranking for this query today sends readers to studios in that rate band. At $25 an hour you are not buying a cheaper Metalab, you are buying a different product. That can be the right call, and it belongs on a page about outsourcing.

When Metalab is still the right choice

Four situations where we would tell you to go pay them.

Your product is the hard part, and it's big. A multi-surface application with real complexity, research needs, and engineering handoff. 475+ products shipped with fully dedicated teams is a different machine than a 7-person studio.

You need a household name for a board or an acquirer. "Metalab did it" carries weight in rooms you are not in. That is worth money, and it is honest to say so.

Consumer scale. Slack, Coinbase, Uber, Headspace. If your surface is consumer and the user count is enormous, that is their home turf and not ours.

You have the budget and the calendar. $100k+ and a few months, with no launch date forcing the issue. Take the longer engagement. It is better.

The reverse is also true, and it is why this page exists. If you raised a Series A eight months ago, your site was built in Claude Code over a weekend in 2024, and your first enterprise AE starts in three weeks, a four-month engagement is not a better version of what you need. It is the wrong purchase.

That is the trap here. The most expensive studio is not the safest choice, it is the choice with the longest gap between deciding and shipping.

David Walsh, CEO of Limelight, has bought most of the options on this page across twelve years. His summary after hiring us:

"over the last 12 years, I've worked with: Big-name website agencies. 'Top-rated' Upwork freelancers. Designers with huge followings. And none came close."

He posted it unprompted and named all four people who did the work. Big-name is a category, not a guarantee.

FAQ

What are the best Metalab alternatives for startups?

For funded B2B startups: PIXELUP LABS ($25–40k, 2–5 weeks), Clay ($50k+), Ramotion ($50k+), Focus Lab (from about $30k), basement.studio ($10k+), and Character ($80–250k) at the prestige end. Match the choice to the job, not the reputation: product complexity points to Clay, systems to Ramotion, committee politics to Focus Lab, a deadline to us.

How much does Metalab cost?

Metalab publishes no prices. Their Clutch profile lists a $100,000+ minimum project size and DesignRush lists $50,000 and up, both checked August 2026. Assume six figures for brand plus product work, and months rather than weeks.

Is Metalab worth it?

Yes, if the brief matches. They have shipped 475+ products since 2006 and staff teams 100% dedicated to one client. At $100k+ over several months, the question is not quality. It is whether your stage can absorb the timeline.

Who is cheaper than Metalab?

Everyone on this list. basement.studio starts at $10,000, Focus Lab's Clutch minimum is $25,000, we run $25–40k, and Clay and Ramotion both start at $50,000, against Metalab's $100,000 Clutch floor. Cheaper is easy to find. Cheaper with senior taste and a real point of view is the hard part.

What studios are like Metalab at a Series A budget?

At $25–50k the realistic set is PIXELUP LABS, Focus Lab's lower tier, and basement.studio for web-only work. Clay and Ramotion are the step up at $50k+. Below $25k you are buying execution without strategy, which is fine if the strategy is already done.

Does Metalab work with AI startups?

Yes. They rebranded Windsurf in 2025 and their portfolio includes Midjourney and Suno. AI is one of the industries they name directly, alongside fintech, productivity, healthcare, and SaaS.

How long does a Metalab engagement take?

Metalab does not publish timelines, and fully dedicated teams point to months rather than weeks. For comparison, our brand sprint is 2 weeks, a site is 3, and brand plus site is 4 to 6.

Which studio should a funded startup pick for brand and product design?

Work backwards from your deadline and your decision structure. Deadline inside 8 weeks with one or two decision-makers: a boutique sprint studio, which is our lane. A quarter or more with a committee: Focus Lab or Character. A genuinely complex product surface at $50k+: Clay or Metalab.
