Clay's $50,000 Clutch minimum isn't a markup. It's the price of brand, product, code, and content from one vendor at Clay (clay.global), the San Francisco design agency. The best Clay agency alternatives: PIXELUP LABS for brand + website on a deadline ($25–40k), Ramotion for Clay-level scope with printed prices ($60–85k), MetaLab for complex apps ($100k+), Focus Lab for committee rebrands ($75k+), C42D for naming (from $20k), and Smith & Diction for identity (custom quote).
TL;DR
For a funded B2B startup at Series A or B, holding a Clay proposal:

| Clay-level scope, printed prices | **Ramotion** | $60k or $85k brand packages, website extra |

How we picked, and how we know this market
We wrote this list and put PIXELUP LABS first, so read our entry with that in mind. It carries our prices, what we're bad at, and the five studios we'd hand specific jobs to.
The filter: senior-led studios that can do a real slice of Clay's job (brand, website, or product) for a funded B2B startup, with a price we could check. Every number links to the studio's site or Clutch profile, with the check date. We haven't hired these studios or read their private proposals, so this is our read of their public offers.
Our side of it: 31 projects for funded B2B and AI-native startups, including Sully, Sainapse, Bland, Reducto, and CTGT, with 5.0 stars across every review. We publish our prices on Contra. So do Ramotion, Focus Lab, and C42D.
Left out: design subscriptions like Designjoy, which buy throughput rather than a rebrand. Clay's local peers are on our San Francisco design agencies list.
What does Clay cost?
Clay publishes no price list and no timeline. Its Clutch profile lists a $50,000 minimum at $150–199 an hour, and Clutch's budget data puts most reviewed projects between $50,000 and $199,999.
| Clay | Figure | Source (checked Sep 25, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum project | $50,000+ | Clutch |
| Hourly rate | $150–199 | Clutch |
| Most common reviewed budget | $50,000–$199,999 | Clutch |
| Branding budgets in reviews | $200,000–$999,999 | Clutch |
| Reviews | 32, averaging 4.8★ | Clutch |
| Engagement models | time and materials, fixed fee, retainer | [clay.global](https://clay.global) |
On Clutch, reviewed projects ran from two months (a 2024 website redesign) to more than a year (a combined web, app, and branding engagement).
The price buys breadth. Clay sells branding, UI/UX, web and app development, content production (copy, illustration, 3D, video, photography), and generative-AI product design. Its B2B work includes web redesigns for Tipalti and Cornerstone.
So a cheaper Clay is the wrong search. Decide which slice of Clay's scope you need, then buy that slice.
How do the Clay agency alternatives compare?
Three Clay agency alternatives print real prices: Ramotion, Focus Lab, and C42D. Smith & Diction quotes through a proposal, MetaLab sits above Clay's floor, and we sit below it.
| Studio | Price signal | Timeline | Scope | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **PIXELUP LABS** | $15k brand sprint · $25–40k brand + website · retainer from $6k/mo | 2–4 weeks sprint · 6–8 weeks brand + website | positioning, identity, website, design system | published on Contra |
| Ramotion | $60k Brand Creation · $85k Brand Redesign · website priced on top | 3.5 months | brand, website, product, engineering packages | Sep 25, 2026 |
| MetaLab | $100,000+ minimum (Clutch) | not published | product design and brand | Sep 25, 2026 |

| Smith & Diction | custom proposal | set in the proposal | visual and verbal identity | Sep 9, 2026 |
1. PIXELUP LABS: brand and website for startups going enterprise

What it is. The enterprise-readiness design partner for funded B2B startups, most of them AI-native. Seven people, based in San Francisco with the production studio in Bangalore, with founder-led creative direction on every project.
Where it shines. Weeks, not quarters. PIXELUP LABS ships a brand sprint in 2–4 weeks for $15k, and brand plus website in 6–8 weeks for $25–40k, against Clay's $50k floor.
The work starts from positioning. Our Sainapse work, for a company with deployments at Ford and Freshworks, included the IIRA positioning framework. Sully asked for a website redesign, and we reframed it as the sales-enablement problem it was.
We leave the design system behind, so the brand doesn't slide into brand entropy after launch.
Where it doesn't. We're a small senior team. If a steering committee signs off on every decision, Focus Lab or Clay will serve you better, and we'll say so on the first call.
We're a design studio, not an engineering firm or a content studio, and Clay sells both. And $15k is real money at seed: if you're pre-PMF, use a template and Claude Code, honestly, and come back after the pivot settles.
Pricing signal. Brand sprint $15k, brand plus website $25–40k, and retainers from $6k/mo, all published on Contra.
Verdict. Hire us if you've raised, you're moving upmarket, and a launch or pipeline review has a date. Bring the deadline and one person who can make the call.
2. Ramotion: Clay-level scope with printed prices

What it is. A San Francisco studio selling branding, product design, and engineering as named startup packages.
Where it shines. Ramotion is the closest like-for-like swap for Clay, and it prints the number first. Brand Creation lists strategy, a visual identity system, a 1–5 page website with a Webflow or Jamstack build, and a pitch deck.
Where it doesn't. It isn't the cheaper option. The footnotes price the website separately: $25,000–60,000 on top of Brand Creation, and $45,000 for about seven pages of design on top of Brand Redesign, with development quoted after. Both brand packages run 3.5 months.
Pricing signal. Brand Creation $60,000 and Brand Redesign $85,000, website extra per the footnotes, checked September 25, 2026.
Verdict. Hire Ramotion when you want Clay's breadth and want to see the price before the first call. With a website included, expect $85,000 and up.
3. MetaLab: when the app is the hard part

What it is. A product design studio founded in 2006, acquired by Tiny in 2017, with 475+ products shipped. It rebranded Windsurf in 2025.
Where it shines. Complex, multi-surface products. MetaLab teams go "100% dedicated to a single client," which is the right shape when the application itself is the brief. If you'd hire Clay mainly for app design, MetaLab is the peer to compare.
Where it doesn't. The floor is double Clay's, and MetaLab publishes no timeline. If your problem is the brand and the marketing site, you'd pay product-studio rates for the wrong half of the work.
Pricing signal. Clutch lists a $100,000+ minimum, checked September 25, 2026. More options at this tier are on our MetaLab alternatives page.
Verdict. Hire MetaLab when the product surface is the brief and $100k is available.
4. Focus Lab: a B2B rebrand that has to clear a committee

What it is. A B2B branding agency covering positioning, visual and verbal identity, web design, and brand systems, per its services page.
Where it shines. Stakeholder alignment. Its Structural Rebrand offer names multi-brand architecture and M&A integration outright, which is committee work by definition. If four people hold a veto, this is the strongest entry here.
Where it doesn't. Product design and heavy development. Focus Lab builds smaller brochure sites in Webflow and refers complex development and company naming to partners. If you were weighing Clay for app work, this isn't the swap.
Pricing signal. Focused Branding runs about $15,000–50,000 over 1–3 months, and Structural Rebrand about $75,000–350,000 over 3–5 months, per its FAQ, checked September 9, 2026.
Verdict. Hire Focus Lab for a B2B rebrand with real internal politics.
5. C42D: a new name plus a WordPress launch

What it is. A New York branding agency offering strategy, naming, identity, and WordPress website design and development, per its services page.
Where it shines. Naming and brand evolution in one engagement. Its CloudZero case study kept the logo's equity and rebuilt the system around it: typography, diagrams, and components a team with no in-house designer could use.
Where it doesn't. WordPress, so check it fits your stack. And the Series A package's 8–16+ week schedule won't fit a launch six weeks out.
Pricing signal. Packages from $20,000 (early stage, 6–8 weeks), $45,000 (Series A or refresh, 8–16+ weeks), and $95,000 (complex, 16+ weeks), checked September 8, 2026.
Verdict. Hire C42D when the name has to change with the brand and WordPress suits your team.
6. Smith & Diction: identity for AI-era tech

What it is. A branding studio whose technology work includes Calendly, Perplexity, and Gamma.
Where it shines. The brand idea itself. Its Calendly case study shows a product that outgrew scheduling: the name stayed, and the identity grew around the broader role.
Where it doesn't. No public price or schedule, so budget and availability stay unknown until the proposal. Confirm website and product scope before comparing it with Clay.
Pricing signal. Custom proposal, and the Clutch profile leaves pricing undisclosed, checked September 9, 2026.
Verdict. Hire Smith & Diction when the identity is the whole question and its portfolio matches where you want to go.
When is Clay still the right choice?
Clay is the right hire when you need brand, product design, engineering, and content from one vendor at once, with a client list procurement will recognize.
You need all of it at once. One contract for brand, UX/UI, development, and content, with one team accountable for the fit.
Procurement wants a known client list. Google, Stripe, Coinbase, Slack, Cisco, and UPS on a vendor's roster does work in a vendor review that a boutique portfolio can't.
A committee signs off. Several of Clay's Clutch reviews credit its milestone tracking and on-time delivery. That suits a multi-stakeholder project better than our founder-to-founder process does.
Your team spans time zones. Offices in San Francisco, New York, Austin, Denver, Lisbon, and Belgrade cover US and European hours.
FAQ
What are the best Clay agency alternatives?
PIXELUP LABS ($15k brand sprint, $25–40k brand + website), Ramotion ($60k and $85k packages), MetaLab ($100,000+), Focus Lab (about $15–350k), C42D (from $20k), and Smith & Diction (custom proposal). A deadline points to us, printed packages to Ramotion, a complex app to MetaLab, and a committee to Focus Lab.
How much does Clay charge, and is it worth it?
Clay publishes no prices. Its Clutch profile lists a $50,000 minimum and $150–199 an hour, with most reviewed projects between $50,000 and $199,999 (checked September 25, 2026). It's worth it when you need brand, product, engineering, and content at once; for a brand and a website alone, that floor buys scope you may not use.
What should you ask a Clay alternative before signing?
Ask what the price excludes. Website build, development, and naming are the usual gaps: Ramotion prices its website separately, and Focus Lab refers naming to partners. Then ask who makes decisions on both sides, because a founder-led sprint and a committee rebrand run on different clocks.
Who is cheaper than Clay for brand and website work?
PIXELUP LABS at $25–40k for brand plus website, C42D from $20,000, and Focus Lab's Focused Branding at about $15,000–50,000. Ramotion and MetaLab aren't cheaper once a website is in scope. Our cost guide maps budgets by stage.
Clay vs Ramotion: which should you pick?
Ramotion prints its packages ($60,000 and $85,000, 3.5 months, website extra), while Clay quotes per project from a $50,000 minimum. Pick Ramotion to see the price first, and Clay when content production should sit with the same team.
How long does a Clay project take?
Clay publishes no timeline, but on Clutch a website redesign ran two months and a branding and UX/UI redesign ran five. Our brand sprint takes 2–4 weeks, and brand plus website takes 6–8.
Is Clay the design agency the same company as Clay.com?
No. Clay at clay.global is a San Francisco branding and UX design agency. Clay.com is a sales data-enrichment platform and a separate company.
PIXELUP LABS vs Clay: which should a funded startup hire?
Hire PIXELUP LABS for brand plus website on a deadline: $25–40k over 6–8 weeks, with founder-led creative direction. Hire Clay for brand, product, engineering, and content from one vendor, starting at $50,000. If a committee owns the decision, Clay's structure fits better than ours.
Price is a scope statement. Buy the slice of Clay you need, and if that slice is brand plus website with a date attached, our prices are on Contra.
