The best design agencies for YC startups split by how far past Demo Day you are. In the batch, Awesomic ($1,490–2,995 a month) or Designjoy ($4,995 a month) covers launch work, and at seed Zypsy trades design for equity. After the Series A, PIXELUP LABS ships a $15k brand sprint in 2–4 weeks for teams going enterprise, and past the Series B, MetaLab and Clay list minimums from $50,000.

"Backed by YC" is not a brand. It's a line every company in the batch can print. Two years after Demo Day, enterprise buyers stop judging your product and start judging whether you'll exist in three years.

This list is for YC companies at that point: Series A raised, first enterprise AE hired, a site that still reads like the batch. It also tells founders still in the batch what to skip.

Every studio below names at least two YC companies as clients on its own website. We looked up each one in YC's company directory on October 7, 2026.

Methodology: how we picked and ordered these design agencies for YC startups

We put 11 design studios through four tests on October 7, 2026, and eight passed. The candidates were the studios that come up when founders search for design help for YC companies, plus the studios we already compare on our other lists.

The four tests. Every studio on this list passed all of them:

  1. It names at least two YC companies on its own website, in a case study, work page, logo wall, or testimonial, and each one is in YC's directory. One name wasn't enough.
  2. It operates under its own name today.
  3. It has a public price signal, or one reported by a directory and labeled that way.
  4. It wins a stage or a job no other entry wins, and we could say where it's the wrong choice. An entry with no weakness is an ad.

How we checked YC clients. A YC client here means a company in YC's company directory, listed with its batch: W24 is Winter 2024, S21 is Summer 2021, F24 is Fall 2024. We looked up studios' named clients in YC's directory and recorded the batch of each match. Unnamed logos and "YC-backed founders" with no company attached didn't count.

What we compared. For each studio we recorded six things: stage fit, named YC clients, price and its source, published timeline, engagement model, and where it's the wrong choice. We didn't add them into a score.

Where the facts come from. Prices come from each studio's own pages, its Clutch and DesignRush listings, or press coverage, and every competitor entry prints its check date. We haven't hired any of these studios, so each "where it doesn't" comes from their public pages and listings. Other agencies' lists only helped us find names.

How we ordered the list. PIXELUP LABS is first because this is our list. The other seven run in stage order, from the batch to late stage, since budgets grow from YC's $500,000 check onward. They aren't ranked against each other: number two isn't better than number eight.

What changes the list. A studio that names a second YC client can move on, and one that stops operating under its own name moves off. The three studios that failed a test are named in the cut list, each with its reason.

How we know this market

We have run 31 projects for funded B2B and AI-native startups, with 5.0★ across every review. Eleven of our clients are YC companies: Greptile (W24, for its 2025 rebrand and design system), Reducto (W24), Monumint (W24), Sully (S21), Bland AI (S23), CTGT (F24), Revyl (F24), Dayflow (S24), Synthio Labs (Spring 2025), Autumn (S25), and Audrion (F25).

That doesn't make us neutral. It does make us familiar with the moment a YC company outgrows its Demo Day site. Our Brand Sprint price is public on Contra, so you can rule us out before a call.

What does design cost a YC startup in 2026?

Design for a YC startup costs $0 to $50,000 and up, depending on stage. In the batch, most teams should spend $0 on a template or $1,490–4,995 a month on a subscription. After the Series A, brand plus website runs $25–40k at a sprint studio, Ramotion's brand package alone is $60,000, and MetaLab and Clay start at $50,000.

YC's standard deal is the yardstick. YC invests $500,000: $125,000 for a fixed 7%, and $375,000 on an uncapped MFN SAFE. A $15k brand sprint would take 3% of that check, which is why most teams in the batch should wait.

A brand sprint is a fixed-scope project that ships positioning and a visual identity in weeks, not a retainer that runs for months.

A $50,000 minimum is 10% of YC's entire check. That gap is the whole argument for hiring by stage.

If you're weighing a studio against a freelancer or a first design hire, our agency vs freelancer vs subscription vs in-house guide compares all four.

1. PIXELUP LABS: best for YC companies going enterprise after the Series A

PIXELUP LABS homepage hero (pixeluplabs.com), captured September 25, 2026
PIXELUP LABS homepage, captured September 25, 2026 · pixeluplabs.com

What it is. PIXELUP LABS is the enterprise-readiness design partner for funded B2B startups, most of them AI-native. We're a 7-person studio in San Francisco, with the production studio in Bangalore, and we ship positioning, brand, website, and product design as one argument.

YC clients we checked. Greptile (W24, the 2025 rebrand and design system), Reducto (W24), Monumint (W24), Sully (S21), Bland AI (S23), CTGT (F24), Revyl (F24), Dayflow (S24), Synthio Labs (Spring 2025), and Autumn (S25). Audrion (F25) has no YC directory page to check.

Where it shines. The moment after the Series A when the product has moved upmarket and the brand hasn't. At that point the YC logo isn't the flex. A brand buyers recognize before they read the name is.

Greptile's 2025 rebrand and design system turned "we find bugs in your codebase" into a green lizard that kills bugs, backed by 200+ components with developer-first docs.

Sully's website redesign became a sales-enablement project, because that was the real problem. Monumint went from kickoff to a public rebrand and one-page site in seven weeks, and Synthio Labs put our pace this way: "they get timelines, a rarity!"

Where it doesn't. In the batch, $15k is 3% of YC's $500,000 check, and most teams should spend it on the product. If you're still pivoting, there's no opinion for us to build a brand around yet.

MetaLab is the better hire for product design plus engineering at scale. For interactive craft aimed at developers, basement.studio wins, and Clay wins an enterprise brand program with a committee. We're not a growth agency either: we fix how you're perceived, not how many leads you buy.

Price and timeline. Brand sprint $15k in 2–4 weeks, brand plus website $25–40k in 6–8 weeks, and a retainer from $6k/mo. Our Brand Sprint is listed on Contra.

Verdict. Hire us when you've raised the A, hired the first enterprise AE, and procurement has started asking how long you've been around. Most teams shouldn't hire us just for Demo Day.

2. Awesomic: best for design capacity during the batch

Awesomic homepage hero (awesomic.com), captured September 25, 2026
Awesomic homepage, captured September 25, 2026 · awesomic.com

What it is. Awesomic is a YC company itself (S21): a subscription that matches startups with vetted designers, developers, and no-coders, usually within 24 hours.

YC clients we checked. Pylon (W23) and Fondo (W18). Both founders give testimonials on Awesomic's homepage, and several more testimonials there carry YC batch badges.

Where it shines. Speed at a batch budget. In a testimonial on that homepage, Playhouse co-founder Nathan Shinder says Awesomic built the company's Webflow landing page and it "went live in a matter of days."

Where it doesn't. Judging by its public pages, you buy matched talent by the month, not a team that owns your positioning. The plans sell design, copy, and Webflow capacity, so the strategy has to come from you.

Price and timeline. Awesomic publishes $1,490/mo for Graphic Pack, $2,995/mo for All-in-One (copy, design, and Webflow), and $200/mo for its AI design product, monthly with no commitment (checked September 30, 2026). Quarterly plans save 20%.

Verdict. Hire Awesomic in the batch when you need a landing page, a deck, and launch graphics this month, and you can write the brief yourself.

3. Designjoy: best for a steady queue of design requests

Designjoy homepage hero (designjoy.co), captured September 25, 2026
Designjoy homepage, captured September 25, 2026 · designjoy.co

What it is. Designjoy is Brett Williams' productized design subscription: one senior designer, no account layer, one active request at a time.

YC clients we checked. Webflow (S13) and Product Hunt (S14), both on the logo wall on Designjoy's homepage. The logos don't say what the work was.

Where it shines. Taste and predictability. The price is public, most requests come back in two business days on average, and you can pause or cancel anytime.

Where it doesn't. One request at a time is also the ceiling. A brand, a site, a deck, and a product surface can't move in parallel, and the work list (websites, logos, UI, Webflow, brand guides, decks, ads) doesn't include positioning.

Price and timeline. Designjoy publishes $4,995/mo, discounted from $5,995 (checked October 7, 2026).

Verdict. Hire Designjoy when the story is settled and you need one good designer working through a queue every week.

4. Zypsy: best when you have more equity than cash

Zypsy homepage hero (zypsy.com), captured October 7, 2026
Zypsy homepage, captured October 7, 2026 · zypsy.com

What it is. Zypsy describes itself as a design team for founders, with an investment arm. It was founded in 2018 and does brand, product, and engineering work.

YC clients we checked. Podium (W16) and Cortex (W20), both on Zypsy's work page.

Where it shines. Paying in equity. Its Design Capital program, as TechCrunch reported in April 2024, trades $100,000 of brand and product design for 1% equity on a SAFE, over 8 to 10 weeks. Zypsy wins only if you do.

Where it doesn't. Equity is the most expensive currency a winning company has: 1% of a $1 billion company is $10 million. Eight to ten weeks also won't fit a Demo Day six weeks out, and TechCrunch reported that work beyond the program's scope moves to a cash retainer.

Price and timeline. Zypsy's site doesn't list current Design Capital terms (checked October 7, 2026), so treat the 2024 figures as a reported signal. For cash projects, its Clutch profile lists a $50,000+ minimum.

Verdict. Hire Zypsy at seed when runway is tighter than your cap table and you want a design partner paid in the same currency as your investors.

5. basement.studio: best for developer-facing brand and web craft

basement.studio homepage hero (basement.studio), captured September 25, 2026
basement.studio homepage, captured September 25, 2026 · basement.studio

What it is. basement.studio is a design and engineering studio based in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Its FAQ lists Vercel, Cursor, Harvey AI, ElevenLabs, and Scale AI among its clients.

YC clients we checked. Scale AI (S16), "A Partnership Built for Growth" (2025), and Mintlify (W22), "Documentation, Reimagined" (2026). Both are on its showcase.

Where it shines. The visual language engineers respect. If your buyer is a developer, a basement site says you belong in the same room as Vercel and Cursor.

Where it doesn't. Judging by its public work, basement is a craft and web studio more than a positioning shop. If you can't state your category claim yet, strong execution makes an unclear idea louder.

Price and timeline. basement publishes no price on its site or FAQ (checked October 7, 2026). Reported Clutch figures put the minimum at $10,000 and hourly rates at $100–149. We couldn't find a live profile to confirm them, so treat them as a reported signal, not a quote.

Verdict. Hire basement when you sell to developers, your positioning is settled, and you want the craft your buyers' engineers already admire.

6. Ramotion: best for brand and product UI from one team, at a published price

Ramotion homepage hero (ramotion.com), captured September 25, 2026
Ramotion homepage, captured September 25, 2026 · ramotion.com

What it is. Ramotion calls itself a product and brand design agency, with offices in San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. It was founded in 2009, and its About page lists 70 team experts.

YC clients we checked. Stripe (S09) and Truebill (W16, now Rocket Money), both on its work page. Ramotion says it did Truebill's branding and UI/UX, then came back to refresh the brand as Truebill grew past subscription management.

Where it shines. Work where brand identity and product UI carry equal weight. The price is published, which MetaLab, Clay, and basement.studio don't do.

Where it doesn't. The brand packages take 3.5 months and price the website separately, so brand plus a 1–5 page site runs $85,000–120,000. That's not a sprint before a funding announcement.

Price and timeline. Ramotion's startup packages list Brand Creation at $60,000 and Brand Redesign at $85,000, each 3.5 months, plus $25,000–60,000 for a 1–5 page website (checked October 7, 2026). Its Brand Team Extension runs $9,500 a month part-time, with a three-month minimum.

Verdict. Hire Ramotion at Series A or B when the brand and the product UI need one team and you'd rather buy a published package than wait for a quote. Our Ramotion alternatives page covers faster and cheaper routes.

7. MetaLab: best for growth-stage product design and engineering

MetaLab homepage hero (metalab.com), captured September 25, 2026
MetaLab homepage, captured September 25, 2026 · metalab.com

What it is. MetaLab is a product design and engineering studio founded in 2006 in Victoria, BC. Its teams are "100% dedicated to a single client," and it has shipped more than 475 products.

YC clients we checked. Coinbase (S12), Instacart (S12), and Webflow (S13), all on its work page. For Coinbase, MetaLab designed and built the marketing site that introduced Bitcoin to new buyers.

Where it shines. Complex software with a lot of surface area. A dedicated team designs and builds next to yours, which is what a Series B product adding new user types needs.

Where it doesn't. It's priced and staffed for scale. A brand-and-site sprint before a funding announcement is a small job for a studio with a $100,000 Clutch minimum.

Price and timeline. MetaLab publishes no prices. DesignRush lists "$50,000 & Up" and Clutch a $100,000+ minimum (both checked September 30, 2026). No timeline is published.

Verdict. Hire MetaLab after the Series B, when the product is the hard part and you want design and engineering from one team. Our MetaLab alternatives page covers the cheaper routes.

8. Clay: best for an enterprise brand program at late stage

Clay homepage hero (clay.global), captured September 25, 2026
Clay homepage, captured September 25, 2026 · clay.global

What it is. Clay is a San Francisco brand, UI/UX, and digital agency with offices in New York, Austin, Denver, Lisbon, and Belgrade. Its services run from brand strategy and identity to product design and full development.

YC clients we checked. Stripe (S09) and Coinbase (S12), both on its work page, Coinbase in the archive.

Where it shines. Programs with many stakeholders. On Clay's Clutch profile, 70% of clients are enterprises with more than $1 billion in revenue. A brand program that spans product, web, and several teams is its home ground.

Where it doesn't. A $50,000 minimum and $150–199 an hour assume an enterprise budget and timeline. A Series A team that needs a brand before a funding announcement isn't the job Clay is shaped for.

Price and timeline. Clutch lists a $50,000+ minimum and $150–199 an hour (checked September 25, 2026). No timeline is published.

Verdict. Hire Clay at late stage, when the brand program spans product, web, and several teams. Our Clay agency alternatives page covers smaller budgets.

Studios we cut, and why

Three studios we considered failed one of our tests: at least two named YC clients, or operating under their own name today. Here is why, so you can check our work.

Zyner sells a $9,000 or $14,000 brand-and-site sprint in 2–3 weeks, built for founders in YC and a16z speedrun before Demo Day. Its site names one YC founder, Manil Lakabi (F24), and its homepage client list gives descriptions and funding amounts but no company names, so it fails test 1. If you're in the batch, it's still worth a call.

Parallel is a product design studio whose case-study page lists 34 active clients. The only one we could match in YC's directory is Gullak (S22). Its homepage says engagements "typically start at $10k."

Character fails test 2. It was acquired by Dentsu in 2018 and now operates as part of Dentsu Creative.

Which design agency should a YC startup hire at each stage?

A YC startup should hire a design agency by stage, not by logo. In the batch, spend almost nothing, and at seed, buy capacity or trade equity. After the Series A, pay for positioning and a system; after the Series B, pay for scale.

In the batch, still pivoting. Hire nobody. Ship a template with Claude Code and keep it easy to change. Fall 2026 Demo Day is December 2, and a sharp homepage matters more than a logo.

In the batch, story settled. Awesomic or Designjoy for the landing page, the deck, and launch graphics. Zyner also sells a $9,000 Demo Day sprint, though it names only one YC client.

Seed, more equity than runway. Zypsy.

Series A raised, first enterprise AE, procurement asking how long you've been around. PIXELUP LABS. Our guide to looking enterprise-ready covers what to fix first.

Selling to developers, positioning settled. basement.studio.

Brand and product UI from one team, on a published package. Ramotion.

Series B and later. MetaLab when the product is the hard part. Clay when the brand program spans teams.

Hire for the stage you're in, not the one on your pitch deck.

FAQ

Which design firms are known for supporting fast-moving YC teams?

Awesomic and Designjoy move fastest for teams in the batch. Awesomic matches a designer in about 24 hours, and Designjoy returns most requests in two business days. For a full brand and website after the Series A, PIXELUP LABS ships in 6–8 weeks and has worked with 11 YC companies, from Sully (S21) to Audrion (F25). Every studio on this list names at least two YC clients we checked in YC's directory.

Who do Y Combinator founders hire for product design?

It depends on the stage. MetaLab lists Coinbase (S12), Instacart (S12), and Webflow (S13) among its clients and fits growth-stage products. Ramotion pairs product UI with brand, as it did for Truebill (W16). Earlier, Zypsy does brand and product work for equity, and Awesomic matches designers by the month from $1,490.

Who offers strong branding and product design for YC-backed companies?

Zypsy, Ramotion, and MetaLab all cover brand and product: Zypsy for seed teams paying in equity, Ramotion on published packages from $60,000, MetaLab for growth-stage budgets of $50,000+. PIXELUP LABS covers brand, website, and product design for YC companies after the Series A, from a $15k brand sprint. Clay covers both at enterprise scale.

We're going through YC and need a credible brand identity fast. Which agencies work at that speed and budget?

In the batch, Awesomic ($1,490–2,995 a month) and Designjoy ($4,995 a month) fit the budget and the clock. Zyner sells a $9,000 Demo Day brand-and-site sprint in 2–3 weeks, though its site names only one YC client. If your positioning is still moving, a template is the honest answer before Demo Day.

Where should a YC founder look for senior product design support?

Look for studios that name YC clients, then check each name in YC's company directory, as we did on October 7, 2026. MetaLab dedicates each team to a single client, and Zypsy pairs product design with brand. If a studio says it works with YC companies, every name it gives should be in that directory with a batch.

How much should a YC startup spend on design?

In the batch, close to nothing: YC's standard deal is $500,000, and a $15k brand sprint would take 3% of it. After a Series A, $25–40k for brand plus website is a normal range at a sprint studio, and MetaLab or Clay start at $50,000. Our startup rebrand and website cost guide breaks it down by stage.

Should a YC startup rebrand before Demo Day?

Rarely. If the product hasn't found its market, a rebrand can't fix it. In a crowded category, sharpen the positioning and the homepage first, then do the full brand before the Series A. Our guide on rebranding before or after a fundraise covers the timing.

Is trading equity for design work a good deal?

It's cheap if the company stays small and expensive if it wins. Zypsy's Design Capital, as reported in 2024, trades $100,000 of design for 1% on a SAFE, and at a $1 billion outcome that 1% is worth $10 million. YC's standard deal buys a fixed 7% for $125,000, about $17,900 a point.

Do design agencies give YC companies a discount?

Some list deals on Bookface, YC's internal network: a Fondo founder's testimonial on Awesomic's homepage calls it "one of the best deals on bookface." We don't run a YC price. Ours are public: $15k brand sprint (listed on Contra), $25–40k brand plus website, and a retainer from $6k/mo.

Best branding agency for Series A startups

It depends on who buys from you. For a B2B Series A team selling to enterprises, we built PIXELUP LABS for that job: $15k for a brand sprint, $25–40k for brand plus website. For developer buyers, basement.studio fits better, and our B2B branding agencies comparison covers nine options.

Can a YC startup use a template and Claude Code until the Series A?

Yes, while the product is still finding its market. A template costs $0 and changes as fast as your pitch does, which matters more in the batch than a logo. The cost shows up once enterprise buyers start checking you out, and our AI startup design agencies guide covers what that sameness costs.

What should a YC founder prepare before hiring a design studio?

Three things: the opinion you hold about your market, the next date that matters (Demo Day, the raise, the first enterprise pilot), and one person who can make decisions. Bring the deck, recent sales calls, and sites you admire. Then ask who maintains the site after launch: we hand over the design system, so brand entropy doesn't set in once we leave.

The bottom line

"Backed by YC" gets you the first meeting. What you look like decides the second one.
